1947 Homer Laughlin “Marsh Bouquet” M-212 Oval Serving Bowl

$15.00

Made by the Homer Laughlin China Company, this ivory oval serving bowl features the company’s Marigold shape, recognizable by its softly scalloped edge and little embossed fan motifs placed around the rim. The decoration is M-212, known as “Marsh Bouquet,” a wonderfully loose arrangement of pink, blue, white, and orange flowers scattered around a larger central bouquet. A fine platinum-colored line finishes the edge. Homer Laughlin collector research identifies Marsh Bouquet specifically as decoration M-212 on the Marigold form.

The Marigold shape has an interesting history of its own. Homer Laughlin art director Frederick Hurten Rhead began developing it in late 1933, initially referring to it simply as the “Daisy Shape.” It was formally named Marigold in 1934 and entered production that July. The shape remained in production until 1952, appearing with numerous floral decals, hand-painted treatments, and metallic trims.

The markings on this bowl allow us to date the actual piece much more precisely. Its factory code reads C47N8. In Homer Laughlin’s date-code system, C represents March, 47 represents 1947, and N8 identifies Newell, West Virginia, Plant No. 8. Plant 8 is especially fitting here: contemporary Homer Laughlin research notes that both Marigold and Virginia Rose wares were produced side by side there.

The bowl carries the quiet evidence of having actually been used. A visible hairline crack travels through the body and can be seen from both the front and reverse, while the metallic rim shows areas of wear and fading. Rather than detracting from the piece, those imperfections give it the kind of patina Macondo Room is meant to preserve: an object that has had a life before arriving here.

Condition

Vintage condition with significant age-related character. A long hairline crack is visible through the body of the bowl and can be seen from both sides. There is also wear and loss to the platinum-colored rim, light surface marking, scattered age spots, and other minor wear consistent with age. Because of the hairline crack, we recommend this piece primarily for decorative display rather than food service. Please review all photographs closely.
