1949 Homer Laughlin Eggshell Georgian “Cashmere” Dinner Plate

$12.00

Made by Homer Laughlin China Company, this vintage Eggshell Georgian plate is decorated in the Cashmere pattern, with sprays of pink and yellow roses, tiny blue flowers, wispy greenery, and a fine gold rim against a warm ivory ground. The subtle raised dot-and-dash border is characteristic of Homer Laughlin’s elegant Eggshell Georgian shape.

Introduced in 1937, Eggshell Georgian was designed as a lighter, more refined dinnerware line inspired by traditional English Georgian table settings. Homer Laughlin offered dozens of decorative treatments on the shape, and Cashmere was among the patterns advertised through Montgomery Ward during the 1940s.

The backstamp on this particular plate gives us an unusually precise date. Its code reads D49N5: Homer Laughlin’s documented coding system identifies D as April, 49 as 1949, and N5 as Newell, West Virginia, Plant No. 5.

That puts this plate squarely in the postwar period, when Homer Laughlin was operating at enormous scale. The company reached peak production in 1948, producing more than ten million pieces of dinnerware that year. This plate left the Newell factory just months later, in April 1949.

The Cashmere decoration is especially lovely in its softness: faded roses, forget-me-not-like blue blossoms, and slender foliage arranged around an otherwise quiet cream-colored plate. Seventy-plus years of use have left their mark, giving the piece a patina that feels collected rather than pristine.

Condition

Good vintage condition with visible signs of its more than 75 years of age and use. The plate shows wear and loss to the gold rim, light surface scratching and utensil marks, scattered age spots and discoloration, along with general surface wear. I do not see an obvious chip or major crack in the photographs provided. All visible age and imperfections are intentionally preserved in the product photography.
