1988 Philmont Scout Ranch 50th Anniversary Boy Scouts Mug
This commemorative ceramic mug was produced for the 50th anniversary of Philmont Scout Ranch, the Boy Scouts of America high-adventure property outside Cimarron, New Mexico. The front features Philmont’s traditional arrowhead motif with “Philmont Scout Ranch / Cimarron N.M.” surrounding a mountain landscape and a prominent gold “50.”
Philmont traces its history to 1938, when oilman Waite Phillips donated the first 35,857 acres of his New Mexico ranch to the Boy Scouts of America. The property initially operated as Philturn Rocky Mountain Scout Camp before developing into Philmont Scout Ranch. In 1988, Philmont celebrated its 50th season of Scout camping, and a variety of commemorative pieces were issued around the anniversary.
The mug is finished in glossy ivory-white ceramic with a thin metallic gold band around the rim and a substantial rounded handle. The underside is simply marked “China.” Matching examples of this specific gold-rimmed “50” mug have surfaced as Philmont Scout Ranch 50th-anniversary memorabilia.
Condition
Good pre-owned condition with age-related wear consistent with previous use.
The ceramic remains glossy and the multicolor Philmont arrowhead graphic is clear. The metallic gold rim shows light wear and finish variation. The underside has darkened contact marks around the foot ring from use and storage.
