Rainbow Council Boy Scouts of America “Thanks!” Ceramic Mug
This ceramic mug was produced for Rainbow Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Illinois scouting council headquartered in the Lockport/Morris area. The front carries a large gold “Thanks!” above the traditional Boy Scouts fleur-de-lis and American eagle emblem, finished in cobalt blue and gold with “Rainbow Council” printed below. Rainbow Council continues to operate in northeastern Illinois today.
The design appears to have been created as a recognition or thank-you piece, likely given to a volunteer, donor, leader, or other council supporter rather than sold as ordinary retail merchandise. The simple white ceramic body and period BSA insignia give it the look of late-20th-century organizational giftware.
Other surviving Rainbow Council mugs have documented dates of 1978, 1979, and 1981, while another known example commemorates the council’s 1984 summer camp. That places this style of Rainbow Council ceramic memorabilia firmly in circulation during the late 1970s and early 1980s, although the exact year of this particular mug cannot be confirmed without a dated marking.
Condition
Good pre-owned vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and previous use.
The white glaze remains glossy, and the blue and gold decoration is clearly visible. Minor surface marks, rubbing, or age-related wear may be present.
